This book is one of my favorite within another Shadowhunter books by Cassandra Clare. I already started reading her book since my Junior High School with Indonesian language. But it was Mortal Instruments series which has Jace and Clary in it.
This one is different series called The Dark Artifices and it is the second book. This series is about magic book like Black Volume. This book is consist of Emma Carstairs, Julian Blackthorn, with another Blackthorn family--Livvy, Ty, Dru, Tavvy, and Mark who is half fairy, Kit, and Kieran.
Okay, just to the point okay okay.
So, this book even though is so thick (699 pages!) but you will find it so fast to read! Because you will not get bored while reading it😁 Anyway I've got the UK cover which is published by Simon & Schuster Children Books (it's the first I bought UK cover).
Spoiler Review
It started with Kit being in Los Angeles Institute which is out of his comfort zone, he wants to run away from there. Because he is grown up with Rook which is thief, so he wants bring something good from Institute, While collecting some things, Jace Herondale visited him and tell him that he is the Lost Herondale which the heir of Stephen Herondale that been never found after he got mad. Because of the announcement of himself that he is Herondale, he postponed his plan to run away and be friend with the twin (Ty and Livvy).
Back again with Emma and Julian who desperate with their forbidden love. Emma planned to make Julian not loving her again by dating Mark and acted like they are in love. Mark trusted Emma and play along, but he just know that this acting for Emma to make Cameron Ashdown not loving her again not Julian.
Julian is angry and jealous towards Mark but because he loves Mark, he let Emma go but he still can not make Emma out of his mind.
When Emma and Julian is still desperate with their love. Gwyn the Hunter announced a bad news that Kieran got punished by Unseelie King because he killed Iarlath (from first book) and asked Mark to help him because he already sworn to the King for not helping Kieran and Mark doesn't.
At first Mark doesn't want to help him because what Kieran did in the past for Emma and Julian (got whipped). But end up help him in the end without telling anyone.
Mark went to Faerie, Emma, Julian and Christina went to find him and go to Faerie by using Christina's necklace and leave the Institute where Centurion stayed for finding Malcolm's body. After they found Mark, together they find the way to Faerie. Before that, they met Phouka. Phouka is a find of faerie, he ask precious thing and give one future to them that they want the most.
They went to Unseelie Land and found Kieran. If they want to release Kieran, one of them should fighting one on one, the one who can answer the riddle from the King can fighting--Emma won. She fought and in the last minute when she already defeated the knight, she opened the mask and saw her father's face (which of course just an illusion). She can not kill him. While Emma desperate, Mark released Kieran who forget everything about whipping and still thinking he and Mark lover. In the end, Emma killed the knight because she can see the real thing of it and they ran from the King and soldier and got helped by Mark's aunt (Seelie Faerie).
In Seelie Court, Julian saw Annabelle alive again because Uncle Arthur's voluntarily death (blood) and she killed Malcolm afterward. After that, he got a mission from the Queen if he wants to break the bond of Parabatai and he can love freely, he needs to bring the Black Volume to her and she will help Nephilim to fight Unseelie King and the Cold Peace needs to end.
Julian told his friends exclude the agreement of Parabatai things and they all agreed.
The adventure from now on. Kieran joined them to Institute to talk to Consule about the Queen agreement. While they are finding the Black Volume, unfortunately, the King also search for it by Seven Rider, old faerie. Emma killed one of them with Cortana, and they hate her for that. In the scene of Rider came to them again for the death of one of them, the got stopped by Annabelle who came because of Ty's letter.
Annabelle and Julian made an agreement. If Annabelle can make statement in front of everyone in Idris that she is the one who killed Malcolm not Zara (Zara Dearborn is Centurion who's father is in Cohort and want to regulate LA Institute and registry Downworlders). She agreed to this if in condition Julian or Magnus accompanied her. He will give Blackthorn mansion in Idris for her for it.
All of them went to Idris and in the day of the meeting of all Nephilim, Magnus fainted and can not accompanied Annabelle neither Julian (because he needs to be on the chair watching). Annabelle got nervous and more nervous when Alec's father gave her Mortal Sword for her to speak (she got like trauma for it because back then it is the one who tortured her). After she talked that she is the one who killed Malcolm, everyone in Cohort especially Zara and her dad did not believe it. Annabelle angry and became mad (who does not? she is too long die after all😆) and kill Alec's dad with Mortal Sword. Julian came near her to calm her down, but she did not. Livvy came near Julian too and gave Julian her sword. Mortal Sword destroyed but it is still sharp and Annabelle pierced it to Livvy's chest!
Julian shocked, Ty fainted, Kit did not see it because he was in another room with Kieran (who got saved by Diego and they--Kieran and Diego went to Scholomance). Emma ran after Annabelle, but while she want to kill her or something, the King kidnapped Annabelle (with Black Volume too because it is on the back of her). Julian was speechless, his baby Livvy can not be saved by Iratze because she is dead..............
How's about the next? We will see it in the 3rd book!!
My word
Okay, I am so speechless about the ending. I have hope that in the next book Livvy can live again but idk the writer opinion about it.So, I love it. I really enjoyed it like another books, if I want to compare from the first book, I prefer this one I think. It has more adventure in it and the cliffhanger in the end just make it perfect for me to craving for the next book.
For the character, I really see the improvement here. All of thee character really join the flow of the story which is good, noone left out. But Julian sometimes is so annoying with his egoism about how he want to saving his family or his love or etc. Just cmon man!! This world is just not you in it and your family!! He is not so hero, he just make family hero, unlike Jace and Clary. I think I love Kit character here, because he is like really observant about something and he is strong for sure. I don't know if there is another Jace or Clary in another book, I just can not replace them from my heart hehe.
Anyway, I love the story goes, it is something good to tell. Faerie story and fighting for the next book looks delicious to read (need to wait it for one year unfortunately). But the flaw is just too many character and too many problems, I do not know if all will be covered in the third book.
